In the USA, it is the CIP code (Classification of Instructional Programs) assigned to your program — not its name — that determines STEM OPT eligibility. Two programs titled "Data Analytics" at two different universities may have completely different CIP codes, making one STEM-eligible and the other not.

Course selection is therefore a visa strategy decision, not just an academic one. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) maintains a STEM-designated programs list.
